The Importance of negative thinking
THE IMPORTANCE OF NEGATIVE THINKING
Not long ago, Iencountered an sms. It was something like this. Never deride or negate or ignore anything however stupid it might seem. Even the clock that does not work is right two times in a day. Interesting!! That being the case, the title of this article was something that came as a flash.
There is a lot being written about these days about the benefits of positive thinking and I fully concur with the same. with an exception. That being positive thinking cannot be used as a support or a crutch for someone who has a negative self image about himself. (taken from the classic Psycho cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz) Stated in other words, beliefs maketh a man is very true. One can’t have crippling beliefs and keep anticipating to succeed. That is the very reason why positive thinking may not work for so many. I have covered this in one of my previous articles too.
As a singer, I was afraid of improvising certain parts of the song in the fear that I would go off key. During home practice however, so much innovation and novelty would flow into my singing. What then could be the reason for my messing up nearly every time I tried something new on stage? What could be the reason that I was working against myself? The reason was my belief that for some reason I would go off key when I try new things. So why take a chance and try something that would stultify me? ï?Š (make me appear foolish)
Once I was called on stage to do a jugal bandhi (a kind of musical competition wherein your talents are pitted against another) with a renowned classical vocalist! You canenvision the trepidation I had! I was practicing a technique called EFT for a while, which is basically a technique to remove energy blocks in your system that can work against you. After I started singing, the raag literally flowed. Not something spectacular or anything like that in the absolute sense but definitely so in the relative sense. Had I carried the old beliefs with myself, I would have become the laughing stock. People later told me that our performances were comparable. What wonder!
Needless to state that experience forever changed the way I looked at positive thinking. So many times in the past I had told myself I would sing well, I would sing in perfect key only having it come to naught. These failures formed some kind of a reinforcement mechanism within me. Man! Was it frustrating?
Till now I haven’t really got to the title of the topic. Or so it seems! ï?Š but I have. Why is negative thinking important? It is because it offers you a way to see things directly without taking a roundabout route. What is that? People tell you think positive think positive, then your life will be filled with positive things, but the point is missed here.
An easier way to look at it is telling yourself “you are thinking negatively, so no wonder your life is filled with negative experiences” in that way you kind of get immediate proof between what you are thinking most of the time and the quality of your life. Then arrives the eureka moment. Wherein you get the knowledge that all you have to do is change your thinking and your beliefs and your life changes. The importance of negative thinking lies in using at as a kind of brief stop over wherein you can look at things and reflect and make corrections. This is a subtle but an important way of looking at things. Yes, the tide will be quick at first but with persistence you will get to where you want to.
This is something I tell myself most of the time. Its not that I think positively always. I do have times of hopelessness and dejection but I train myself to think in ways that are highly empowering and energizing. Examples include making lists of all my achievements, counting my blessings, using the dejection to come up with plans of how I need to get to where I want to, cultivating the art of taking up responsibility for all the results that I have, reading motivational articles and real life stories of how people came from worse situations than I have but have still made it.
Negative thinking, just as anything negative in life can either pull you down or can be used as a spring board to getting you to where you want to. I would like to end with a quote that’s splendid. You might have heard of it earlier and I exhort you to think over it deeply and mull over it till it you feel something in your being.
When you change the way you look at things, the things that look at you’ll change.
warm wishes.
